Short AF Book Review | Teenage Girls Can Be Demons

Hi friends! So today I'm going to be doing a review on "Teenage Girls Can Be Demons" by Hailey Piper. This review is going to be short and sweet (like the title suggests) and spoiler free (however there will be the Goodreads synopsis in this and sometimes it can contain spoilers to please keep that in mind!)

"13 terrifying coming - of - rage stories from the Bram Stoker Award - winning author of Queen Of Teeth, perfect for fans of Clive Barker, Mariana Enriquez and Eric LaRocca.

13 coming - of - rage stories the way only Bram Stoker Award - winning author Hailey Piper can tell them - wildly inventive, brilliantly imaginative, and completely and utterly enthralling.

A vicious group of college upperclassmen prey on the freshman girls in 'Why We Keep Exploding;' an impossible world of sinister desire opens beneath a family basement in 'A Living Piece Of Time;' a girl on a night out realizes a bizarre cop is hunting her in 'The Long Flesh Of The Law;' and in the acclaimed novella 'Benny Rose, The Cannibal King,' a Halloween prank goes horribly wrong when a murderous ghost steps out of an urban legend into the real world.

These stories take our most difficult years of transformation and twist them into new and terrifying shapes, where the monsters are real and you'll do whatever t takes to get away, or get even."

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley, however all opinions are my own.

So the reason I wanted to read this is because I love queer storytelling as you all know, but I especially love queer storytelling when it comes to horror. Friends, I'm not going to lie. I was a bit 50/50 with this one. That is to say, half of the stories I loved, half of the stories I either wasn't to keen on or just didn't keep me interested. I loved that quite a few of these stories focused on trans/queer main characters and Hailey clearly used her own thoughts/experiences to get through those stories and make them as loveable and spooky as they are. My favourite story by far was "Magical Girls Child Crusader Squad" and I would genuinely love for it to be turned into a full novel and not just a short story, as I feel like there was so much potential with that one. It took me so long to read this book because as y'all know I am a night reader and some of these stories were just super scary. The stories that I didn't like wasn't necessarily because of bad writing, just that they didn't grip me as much as the others did. I feel that's because the stories that I loved really pulled me in and made me want to read more, whereas the ones I weren't too keen on just didn't. All in all, I do truly believe that there is a story in this book for everyone to enjoy, and I will be recommending this to my horror loving friends.

I gave this book a 3/5 star rating on Goodreads.

This book is already out!
