Short AF Book Review | My Lips, Her Voice

Hi friends! So today I'm going to be doing a review on "My Lips, Her Voice" by L.L. Madrid. This review is going to be short and sweet (like the title suggests) and spoiler free (however there will be the Goodreads synopsis in this and sometimes it can contain spoilers to please keep that in mind!)

"Copper City's bloody history is steeped in ghost stories and whispers of serial killers, but three girls have caught the attention of something far more sinister.

A grandmother tormented by visions tried to warn the town, but no one listened. Now, a haunted inheritance has passed to her granddaughters, Audrey and Mara. When Mara's body is discovered in the old mine, Audrey fears her grandmother's premonition is manifesting.

The nightmare begins as Mara's spirit returns - lurking under Audrey's skin, hellbent on vengeance and desperate to rekindle things with her former girlfriend, Zadie. Willing to hijack Audrey's body to get what she wants, Mara drags them both into a deadly pursuit.

When another girl in town goes missing, Audrey, Mara, and Zadie know the killer has struck again. In a fight to solve Mara's death and uncover the mystery of disappearances in Copper City, the girls soon find themselves at war with each other. How do you survive long enough to hunt a murderer on the loose if the person inside you might kill you first?"

I received this book as an ARC on Netgalley, however all opinions are my own.

So the reason I wanted to read this is because I genuinely love a good queer thriller. Friends, this book did not disappoint. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat through most of reading this story and got sucked into it straight away. This story was fast paced, tense and just left me wanting more. It was so nice to see these teenage girls being strong and powerful through everything they were going through, and to see the strong feminist message come through with not only how they acted, but how they thought and felt. I'm not going to lie, the multiple POV did confuse me at the time of reading, however I am really glad they were included, especially Audrey's grandma's from the past as it gave us a much bigger view of the full story, than it would have if we'd only had Audrey's and Zadie's. There was parts of this story that were genuinely difficult to read so if you do want to read this one please check the trigger warnings first. I really enjoyed reading this one, and as much as there were some things I didn't necessarily always understand, it was actually quite a good read, just not one of my favourites. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good queer thriller, and as much as I don't think I'll be getting a physical copy of this one I will definitely be reading whatever L.L does write next.

I gave this book a 4/5 star rating on Goodreads.

This book is already out!

Short AF Book Review | Teenage Girls Can Be Demons

Hi friends! So today I'm going to be doing a review on "Teenage Girls Can Be Demons" by Hailey Piper. This review is going to be short and sweet (like the title suggests) and spoiler free (however there will be the Goodreads synopsis in this and sometimes it can contain spoilers to please keep that in mind!)

"13 terrifying coming - of - rage stories from the Bram Stoker Award - winning author of Queen Of Teeth, perfect for fans of Clive Barker, Mariana Enriquez and Eric LaRocca.

13 coming - of - rage stories the way only Bram Stoker Award - winning author Hailey Piper can tell them - wildly inventive, brilliantly imaginative, and completely and utterly enthralling.

A vicious group of college upperclassmen prey on the freshman girls in 'Why We Keep Exploding;' an impossible world of sinister desire opens beneath a family basement in 'A Living Piece Of Time;' a girl on a night out realizes a bizarre cop is hunting her in 'The Long Flesh Of The Law;' and in the acclaimed novella 'Benny Rose, The Cannibal King,' a Halloween prank goes horribly wrong when a murderous ghost steps out of an urban legend into the real world.

These stories take our most difficult years of transformation and twist them into new and terrifying shapes, where the monsters are real and you'll do whatever t takes to get away, or get even."

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley, however all opinions are my own.

So the reason I wanted to read this is because I love queer storytelling as you all know, but I especially love queer storytelling when it comes to horror. Friends, I'm not going to lie. I was a bit 50/50 with this one. That is to say, half of the stories I loved, half of the stories I either wasn't to keen on or just didn't keep me interested. I loved that quite a few of these stories focused on trans/queer main characters and Hailey clearly used her own thoughts/experiences to get through those stories and make them as loveable and spooky as they are. My favourite story by far was "Magical Girls Child Crusader Squad" and I would genuinely love for it to be turned into a full novel and not just a short story, as I feel like there was so much potential with that one. It took me so long to read this book because as y'all know I am a night reader and some of these stories were just super scary. The stories that I didn't like wasn't necessarily because of bad writing, just that they didn't grip me as much as the others did. I feel that's because the stories that I loved really pulled me in and made me want to read more, whereas the ones I weren't too keen on just didn't. All in all, I do truly believe that there is a story in this book for everyone to enjoy, and I will be recommending this to my horror loving friends.

I gave this book a 3/5 star rating on Goodreads.

Short AF Book Review | The Other Parker | ARCC Received By Netgalley

Hi friends! So today I'm going to be doing a review on "The Other Parker" by Sarah Zane. This review is going to be short and sweet (like the title suggests) and spoiler free (however there will be the Goodreads synopsis in this and sometimes it can contain spoilers to please keep that in mind!)

Bri Tanner has one goal for her junior year: destroy Shawn Parker.

After the no - good lousy cheat broke Bri's younger cousin's heart, she's determined to make him pay. He might be able to charm every other person at their school, but not her.

Bri has a secret weapon: she's demisexual and already hates him

There's nothing he can say or do to make her fall for him or his tricks. Shawn might be Harris High's star football player, but Bri Tanner is about to show the player how it feels to be played.

The only problem? The more time Bri spends with Shawn, the more she's around his sister Shannon. Shannon always has a goofy smile, a joke, and a helping hand ready for anyone who needs it.

Shawn Parker has no chance at her heart, but the other Parker? She might be a problem.

This sapphic coming - of - age story inspired by John Tucker Must Die and Easy A is packed full of queer joy, found family, girl power, high school hijinks, and a little bit of revenge."

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley, however all opinions are my own.

So the reason I wanted to read this is literally because this was advertised as "John Tucker Must Die" but make it gay, and I was all in. Friends, the description did not lie. This book was such a fun read. First of all, I got all the nostalgic feelings from this book, it did genuinely feel like watching an early 2000s girlypop movie like John Tucker Must Die, Mean Girls or Easy A. We truly don't make media like that anymore and it makes me so excited to see it coming back. This had everything I wanted in a queer story. The found family in this story was incredible and I loved that the characters friendships were built around what happened to them instead of them tearing each other down. The group was a feminist powerhouse and the wit and banter between them all was hilarious and so much fun to read and feel a part of. There were quite a few twists and turns that I was absolutely was not expecting, but once again just added to the story and made it so much more enjoyable to read. I genuinely laughed out loud so much with this story and kept wanting to pick it up any time I wasn't reading it. This was honestly just such an easy read, and I had such a good time with it. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who just wants a quick fun little read which gives off those y2k girlypop movie vibes, whilst being incredibly queer. I will definitely be picking myself up a physical copy of this book as well as reading Sarah's other books when I get the chance to.

I gave this book a 4/5 star rating on Goodreads.
