Hi friends! So today I'm going to be doing a review on "Nimona" by N.D. Stevenson. This review is going to be short and sweet (like the title suggests) and spoiler free (however there will be the Goodreads synopsis in this and sometimes it can contain spoilers to please keep that in mind!)
"The graphic novel debut from rising star ND Stevenson, based on his beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it 'a deadpan epic.'
Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive sharply irreverent epic from N.D. Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive prologue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full - colour graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild size might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit."
I was gifted this book from Harper Collins, however all opinions are my own.
So the reason I wanted to read this is genuinely because I just wanted to read it before I watched the movie and I had heard so many good things about it. Plus N.D. Stevenson helped create some of my favourite series *Cough* She - Ra And The Princess Of Power *Cough*. So when I saw this in the Harper Collins influencer newsletter I applied for it. Friends, I'm not gonna lie, I was ecstatic when this showed up on my doorstep. As y'all know I LOVE graphic novels, and this one was no different. Friends, I just need you to know this HURT in all the good ways. If you are going to read it, please do so with tissues. N.D. does such a good job at making a story really beautiful without shying away from the nitty gritty of it all. Nimona's story was heartbreaking and truly showed how impactful what she had been through in her life had been for her. All I wanted to do was to reach through the book and give her a massive hug. I genuinely had to put this book down a couple of times in order to not get tears on the pages. You also know I loved this book from the fact that I read this in one sitting (which has been super hard for me to do these days). All in all, Nimona is a beautifully heartbreaking story about what it's like to grow up different, and how that can have such an impact on not only a young person's life but the people that come into their lives after the fact, and their relationships with them. This is forever going to be in my top 3 graphic novel recs now and I will 100% be reading more of N.D. Stevenson's works.
I gave this book a 5/5 star rating on Goodreads.
